TX Southern looks like it needs the conference’s automatic berth to reach the NCAA field because its nonconference slate is dominated by lopsided road defeats at major programs such as at Gonzaga, at Texas A&M, at Vanderbilt, at NC State and at Minnesota and there are no signature neutral or true road wins to counterbalance those losses. The Tigers’ brightest moments are a solid home performance against Mississippi Valley State, a home win over Alabama A&M and a hard-fought road victory at Alcorn State, but those results come against weak opposition and carry limited committee weight compared with the blowouts against high-major foes. The remainder of the schedule against Prairie View, Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Grambling, Southern University, Alcorn State and Jackson State offers realistic chances to build a stronger resume, yet until Texas Southern posts quality wins away from home or in neutral settings the cleanest path to the bracket is earning the automatic berth.
